It’s always scary when your arrive at your website and you don’t see what you expect or were working on all of last night. Well it happened to me today, I arrived to this simple message from WordPress.

“Error 404: NOT FOUND!”

Boy was that scary, I thought maybe I had lost my entire WordPress site – with daily backups I would only lose my work for the day. Still not a positive prospect for any website owner / webmaster.

One WordPress trick that I’ve been taught from some great Server Admin’s, if you’ve been doing lots of changes, reset your .htaccess file. Simple ftp to your domain, rename the .htaccess file to xxx.htaccess, then simple rename the file back to .htaccess

This trick didn’t work for this error.

What I did need to do was login to the WordPress admin. I clicked under [Settings] then I click on the option {Permalinks} once here under Common Settings, I selected the DEFAULT option and click save. Then I checked the website, and it was all back. I then changed the Common Setting back to my choice of Month and name – click saved and I was all back from edge.

This is one of those simple tricks you want to remember, next time something doesn’t load correctly on your WordPress site or blog.

simply changed the paramlinks to defualt hit save then went back to old settings and it worked like a charm.
